Deadly fungal infections in humans could rise due to climate change

While fungal diseases have devastated many animal and plant species, humans and other mammals have mostly been spared. That’s because mammals have strong immune systems that don't allow most fungi to replicate. But climate change may be bringing new fungal threats to human health, a microbiologist warns. Pathogenic versions of the fungus Candida Auris arose independently in Africa, Asia, and South America in 3 years. The versions are from the same species, yet they are genetically distinct, so the spread across continents couldn't have been through human contact. If this assumption is true, C. Auris may become the first example of a new fungal disease emerging from climate change” that poses a risk to humans. Src: https://bit.ly/2MmzUqP

Two dead stars are causing an eclipse every seven minutes: ZTF

The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has spotted that two white dwarf stars, more or less the same size as the Earth, are circling each other at hundreds of kilometers per second causing an eclipse every seven minutes. As they circle each other 8,000 light-years from Earth, they're also being pulled closer together. And unlike with other binary star systems, one white dwarf star hasn't eaten up the other yet. Sometimes these binary white dwarfs merge into one star, and other times the white dwarf is gradually shredded by the heavier one.  Scientists estimate that they will continue to blink in the night sky for another hundred thousand years before colliding into each other.  Src: https://bit.ly/2GyjeZM
