Union Law Minister on Triple Talaq Bill: Deterrence is A Must to Fight Social ill

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad indicated on Thursday that there will be no doubts to make instant triple talaq a criminal offense, saying that “some degree of deterrence is inherent when you reform these social ills”. The government has introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha that proposes to make the practice an offense punishable with imprisonment for up to three years with a fine. The legislation was passed by the 16th Lok Sabha but it lapsed in the Rajya Sabha amid protests by the Congress and other opposition parties. “For the Congress party, led by a distinguished woman leader, to be ambiguous on the issue of triple talaq is shocking, to say the least,” he added. Karnataka Government to Ban Construction of Tall Buildings due to Water Crisis

The Karnataka government is contemplating a five-year ban on construction of multi-storeyed residential buildings because of the acute water crisis, deputy chief minister Dr. G Parameshwara said on Thursday. The Cauvery fifth stage water supply would be inadequate to meet the requirements. Hence, officials have been directed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to bring water from Linganamakki dam in Shivamogga district, near coastal Karnataka. “ Once the DPR is ready, we will examine the pros and cons of the project,” Parameshwara said.
