Cabinet cleared abrogation of Article 370 in J&K in ‘just 7 minutes’

The cabinet meeting that cleared the proposals for revocation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir lasted “just seven minutes”. Union home minister Amit Shah’s introduction of the Article was greeted by loud applause from the ministers present. Earlier this week, Parliament cleared the BJP government’s proposals to strip Jammu and Kashmir of its special status, and divide the state into two Union territories. The decision to bring the issue to the Rajya Sabha first, where the BJP government does not have a majority, was a carefully thought-out strategy to take the Opposition by surprise. Will the Removal of Article 370 act as a positive step towards Jammu & Kashmir's welfare?

A large section of political leaders & journalists in Jammu & Kashmir hold rigid views on the validity of Article 370 and the idea of scrapping it, invokes fear & anger in them. The question then arises, why is Article 370 so controversial? Article 370 of the Indian Constitution is a temporary provision which gives J&K special provision to run the state autonomously. The state is governed by their own laws, and regular rules prescribed by the Indian constitution do not apply in the region. Since the BJP has come into power, the existence of Article is on the verge to end, as the party intends to remove it. Recently the former CM of J&K, Farooq Abdullah called the removal of the provision a 'constitutional coup', he argued that Article 370 can't be repealed until the final resolution regarding the state affairs is not taken. Mehbooba Mufti, another leader from the valley, stated that the dissolution of Article 370 will "end the ties of J&K with India". Political leader Omar Abdullah also voiced for Article 370 stating that he and his party will do everything within their power to help Kashmir gain Independence from India if the provision gets repealed. The contentious Article 370, is not only defended by the politicians but by the locals of the state as well. One of the local journalist from J&K argued that the removal of the Article may cause mass migration of people from other states and the setting up of industries may hamper the environment & state’s demography. Another journalist of the valley debated that people of the state already suffer atrocities at the hands of the Army, so the removal of the provision will only open a door for new violence against the people of the state. Some locals say that removal of Article will only deteriorate the situation in the valley, and debate about the imposition of AFSPA, PSA and how it is misused by Army for targeting the lives of innocents. Article 370 divides the Country into two sections, because some consider it as a roadblock in J&K's welfare & development and the other section of people, especially from Kashmir, thinks that Article 370 protects their entity & integrity.
