A robot that can grow, retract, re-grow to different shapes

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers have developed a robot designed to extend a chain-like appendage flexible enough to rotate and turn in any configuration, yet rigid enough to accommodate heavy loads or to apply torque to assemble parts in tight spaces. When the task is completed, the robot will pull in the appendage and expand it again, at a different length and form, to match the next task. According to the engineers, the robot consists of a rising point or a gearbox that pulls a loose chain of interlocking blocks into the box. Gears in the box then lock the chain units together and feed out the chain, unit by unit, as a rigid appendage. Src: https://bit.ly/34RbcEO
