India, Russia plan to avoid US sanctions, carry on with defence deals

India and Russia have agreed on a new payment method for multi-billion-dollar defense deals, in a bid to avoid risks created by the U.S. threat of sanctions and banking restrictions. The arrangement would enable India to pay for two warships that Russia is building for the navy. Russia is struggling to maintain sales in its strategic defense sector, partly because of U.S. sanctions that threaten sales of Russian weapons. An increasingly important U.S. partner, India also has long-time strategic ties with Moscow. Delivery of the S-400 to India is planned to start post-2020. Src: https://bit.ly/2XPuU05
