‘Election gimmick’: Congress on quota for economically weak in general category

The Congress Monday described the government’s decision of quota for economically backward sections in the general category as an “election gimmick” and accused the BJP of posturing ahead of the national elections. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the government did not think about this for four years and eight months and brought this just months before the model code of conduct coming into effect. He also asked whether the government has the majority to bring about a Constitution amendment in Parliament. source: HT

AGP withdraws support to BJP in Assam over Citizenship Bill

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Monday withdrew its support to ruling BJP in Assam over the Citizenship Amendment Bill, AGP president and minister Atul Bora said. The Bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The decision followed an AGP delegation’s meeting with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi, who asserted that the government will ensure its passage in Lok Sabha Tuesday, Bora said. “We made a last ditch attempt today to convince the Centre not to pass the Bill. But Singh told us clearly that it will be passed in Lok Sabha tomorrow. After this, there is no question of remaining in the alliance,” Bora said in New Delhi after meeting the home minister. source:HT

Mayawati dials Akhilesh, extends support amid reports that CBI may quiz him

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has called up Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and assured him that they would together take on the BJP, which she accused of “dirty tricks” and “disgusting politics.” The phone call came amid reports that Yadav might be questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in an illegal sand mining case. “Mayawati told Akhilesh that these kind of dirty tricks are nothing new for the BJP and the public is fully aware of it. There is no reason to worry and we must fight strongly against such conspiracies,” the BSP said in a statement. source:HT
