Farmers need their dues, not doles from the treasury

That farm loan waivers are politically essential for 2019, but are neither sufficient nor curative for the current agrarian distress is a no brainer. The legendary farmer leader, Sharad Joshi, argued that farmers are no economic offenders and hence mafi (pardon) is an unethical coinage. He argued for Karjamukti (freedom from indebtedness) because the Indian State with its devious laws has inflicted chronic bankruptcy, suicides and forced migration on the farmer. Hence farmers have huge dues from the government. This really makes a case for return of ill-gotten wealth to farmers. Source: HT

Doors are open for AGP if it wants to return to NDA fold,’ says Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is often described as the chankaya of the northeast who helped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stitch up unlikely alliances in the region to achieve its Congress-mukt northeast (Congress-free northeast) mission. Sarma, 49, spoke to Kumar Uttam over the Asom Gana Parishad’s (AGP) decision to withdraw support to the Assam government over the contentious Citizenship Bill, which seeks to give citizenship rights to non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the likely impact of this issue on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Chief selector identifies role for Shubman Gill; says discussions held with Rahul Dravid

The head of selection committee MSK Prasad is excited about young Shubman Gill as he feels that the enormously talented Punjab batsman is now ready for international cricket. “Shubman is comfortable both opening the innings as well as playing in the middle-order. For New Zealand series, we are looking at him as the reserve opener behind Shikhar (Dhawan) and Rohit (Sharma). I won’t comment if he will make it to World Cup but he was phenomenal as an opener for India A in New Zealand. Source: HT
