Opposition’s triple talaq resolution ready, Rajya Sabha showdown imminent

Preparing the ground for a confrontation with the NDA government, a group of Opposition parties backed by the AIADMK, which has rarely opposed the NDA in Parliament, have signed a resolution seeking to send the Triple Talaq bill to a joint select committee. The resolution will be brought in the Rajya Sabha next week when the government brings the legislation for debate and passage in the Upper House. HT

Panel recommends reserve force to cut down army size

The possibility of cutting down the size of India’s 1.2-million strong army by creating a reserve force that can be called up during war; making the Special Forces (SF) a strategic resource; and setting up a new directorate to accelerate technology induction are among the key recommendations made by a government-appointed single-member panel on optimisation of the army, two top government officials said on condition of anonymity. To boost education quality,UGC pushes for autonomous colleges

The University Grants Commission (UGC) , the regulator of the higher education sector, has pushed ahead with the strategy of providing autonomous status to the country’s better performing colleges, in an attempt to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the country’s higher education institutions. Thus far this year, it has given the autonomous status to 37 colleges, taking the total number to 672 colleges across 106 universities. HT

FSSAI bans plastic, newspaper packaging of food items

The country’s top food regulator has prohibited the use of recycled plastic or newspaper and magazine pages for packaging of food items, in a bid to crackdown on use of packaging material that poses a health risk. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has framed new food packaging regulations that are in the process of being notified. The regulations will come into effect from July 1. HT
